Expedition window
Your mission:
You don’t even have to get out of your pyjamas for this expedition! Choose a window to look out of in your house, or school. Get comfy either sitting or standing.
To see how things change you could try this:
- Everyday.
- At different times of the day.
- At a different window.
Prepare to explore your home – you will need:
- Your senses
- A notebook and pencil if you want to record your experience (and camera if you like)
Words of wisdom
Here are some quotes from famous people that might inspire you to become a window explorer.
“I live in a very small house, but my windows look out on a very large world.” Confucius, Ancient Chinese philosopher
“I enjoy travelling and recording far-away places and people with my camera. But I also find it wonderfully rewarding to see what I can discover outside my own window. You only need to study the scene with the eyes of a photographer.” Alfred Eisenstaedt, Photographer
Can you see?
- Anything that moves?
- Anything green? What is it? Is it a living or non-living thing? How many different shades of green can you see?
- Any sky? What colour is it today? If you can see the sky spend 5 minutes just watching it. This works even better if you can lie on your bed, sofa or floor. Sky gazing can be very relaxing. Remember not to stare into the sun!
- Any weather? What is it like where you are? Cloudy, sunny, windy, foggy, stormy, rainy, snowy? If it is rainy and sunny can you see any rainbows? Spend a few minutes seeing if the weather changes.
- Any shapes? Circles, squares, rectangles, lines, stars and more?
Can you hear any sounds?
- Anything natural like birds singing, bees buzzing, animals, wind, people?
- Anything made by humans like cars, sirens, beeping, music?
- If you can open the window can you hear more things?
Doing
- Draw or write about the view from your window.
- Open the window (if it is safe to do this). Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. How do you feel now?
- If your window is open take a sniff – are there any smells in the air?
- Take a photo of what your view is today to keep a visual record.
Feeling
- How does it make you feel when you sit by the window? Do you feel different when you choose another window to look through? Why?
- What is your favourite thing in your view from the window?
- How do you feel when the window is closed or open?
- How does today’s weather make you feel?
Final thoughts
If we feel upset or anxious it can help to do something different. Looking out of a window for 5 minutes brings us back to the present moment and helps us to look outwards again and not inwards.
Give it a try!
