Policy Statement

  • We aim to provide a variety of qualifications which provide all students with the opportunity to achieve their full potential by the most appropriate and direct route.
  • We aim to design assessments to give all students a fair chance to perform to their best ability.
  • Assessments will not unwittingly exclude or disadvantage students with a disability.
  • Our Access to Fair Assessment Policy is based on the concepts of equality, diversity, clarity, consistency and openness.
  • Our Access to Fair Assessment Policy is in line with our RBGE Values.
  • We will endeavour to ensure that the assessment processes are implemented in a way which is fair and non-discriminatory and following the guidance of awarding bodies. This may include making reasonable adjustments for assessments.
  • Students requiring reasonable adjustments should provide evidence of adjustments required. Evidence can include Student Support Needs Assessment (SRUC) or other educational report from a qualified professional.

What students can expect from us

  • We aim to ensure that all assessments are carried out fairly and in keeping with the awarding body’s requirements where applicable.
  • Externally marked tests and exams will be according to the requirements of the awarding body.
  • We aim to teach using a variety of learning techniques to inspire all learners and meet the needs of different learning styles.
  • To be fully inducted onto a new course.
  • That learning outcomes and other significant elements of learning and assessment will be made clear at the outset of the course.
  • That carers, parents, or guardians may accompany a student requiring support (e.g., student under 16 years old).

Here are some examples of how RBGE could make reasonable adjustments in assessments based on the recommendations in the student evidence reports:

  • Allowing students extra time.
  • Adapting assessment materials, such as providing materials in large print, different coloured paper or text or Braille.
  • Provision of a reader and/or scribe.
  • Provision of a separate room.
  • Use of assistive technology for example, a laptop.

Where assessments are offered as part of externally verified qualifications, RBGE staff will adhere to the policies and procedures of the awarding or validating body. For example, SQA, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow and RHS.
